Now friends, the rumors you may have heard are not baseless: The Parson Red Heads are skipping town, permanently, in favor of their original home Portland, Oregon. They're having two farewell shows, and we'll be sharing the stage with them at the first one - Friday September 17th at Spaceland. It's gonna be a real scene.
Related Q & A:
Q: What is The World Record going to do now?
A: You may have noticed that Ross & Brian from The Broken West, Wheelhouse, and Brothers in the Grass have been filling for Evan & Sam a lot this year. Or maybe you didn't notice, but you should probably do a little research before you go asking questions like that willy-nilly.
Q: What about the upcoming show - are Evan & Sam really going to be banned from the band at their own farewell show?
A: Calm down. They'll be sitting in on several songs at this celebratory yet melancholy occasion. This is going to be the last time you'll be seeing them for a while, so try to remain positive.
Q: When are you going to finish your new record?
A: Shortly.

The first is a version of Eminem's immortal all-time super Oscar-Award winning juggernaut "Lose Yourself", which will appear on a tribute being released by Vitamin Records. Not sure when it's coming out, but their last one, "Indie Translations of the College Dropout" (Kanye West) is a fun off-kilter affair. Keep your eyes peelt.
The second is a song by a band that will always be dear to our hearts, the Masters of the Hemisphere. The song, "She Plays Guitar", appeared on their first record, and has long been one of our favorites. It won out over "Billy Mitchell" from the same record, but it was a close call. A Bunch of Beatniks Riding a Rocket will be releasing it web-only when all the submissions are in, which will be in a while we presume.

Thank you for the invitation
We're sure your show will be very nice
Gonna see if we can make it but hey maybe
We can offer you some advice
No, we're not trying to talk down at you
It's from the goodness of the whole of our heart
But we can tell just by looking at you
That you better quit before you start
In the meantime I need some mean time
To wipe out any good will building up
Check the score, we're #1
Turn 'round now back where you're from
Wrote this tune, soon everyone's gonna
Check the score and see that we're #1
Yeah you make a decent stand-in
Typically boring of course
And anyone who asks yeah well we feel
We've got to give them our full report
In the meantime I need some mean time
To break down the defenses of our enemies
Check the score, we're #1
Turn 'round now back where you're from
Wrote this tune, soon everyone's gonna
Check the score and see that we're #1
One less person in dress rehearsal
One less hopeless dreamer
Check the score, we're #1
Turn 'round now back where you're from
Wrote this tune, soon everyone's gonna
Check the score and see that we're #1

All this sunny attitude walks the line
To foreign places that you can't find
Something else is calling, you're left behind
Lonely silhouettes stand on the pier
Only cardboard cutouts as you draw near
Something else is calling, I'll leave you here
Out on the sand there's someone waiting
Guitar in hand, won't stop complaining
Debating if there's anything in this world worth saving
It's getting kinda tough to get noticed here
Where the sideshows constantly interfere
Something else is calling, it's drawing near
So travel out beyond where the cement dissolves
Plant your feet and feel the world revolve
Something else is calling so take the call
We toiled up the ridge when we heard the chord
And the setting sun revealed a reward
A vast expanse of promise, pain, and perfect summers
We'll move inside when it gets hotter
My California sons and daughters
A lovely place with board games and the best bands playing
Guitars forever
Fall upon your knees and kiss the earth

s.m.d.e.p. version is pre-trumpet!
Low riding in a red el dorado
Just a kid under all the bravado
Top down with a half avocado
In headphones looking like mr roboto
Admiration was on full display wow
You were doing things in a new way now
Gathered 'round and we all heard you say how
Everybody's always wearing their stay out
Oh go tell your movers
We are the losers
As the horizon swallows you whole
Shook your fist at the sun, that's enough, stop
Sitting sizzling on the bench at the bus stop
That's about the time you knew that it must stop
Telegram said if you think this is tough stop
Don't matter who's here
See you at new year's
Don't matter who's here
Stop stop disappearing
No it's ok, do what you must now
I'm giving up on what hasn't been
And I feel a fade to serious now
It's gonna be a while before I can get free
I'm busy doing things that I don't care to be
It's gonna be a while before I can make it out
I'm stuck here doing things that I don't care about
Stop stop disappearing
No it's ok, do what you must now
I'm giving up on what hasn't been
And I feel a fade to serious now
It makes me sad...
It makes me fade, I feel a fade to serious now

Get up star
It's time to find what you are
You're gonna knock 'em down
You're not messing around
But these are longer days
When all you want is to play
Get up star
I'm gonna find what you are
You're gonna tip your hand
Show me what you planned
But there's no way
When all you want is to play
Just bear down
Get up D
Come on, get up D
It's a mystery but it's easy
You just bear down, bear down
Bear down, sink down
Sink beneath, a slow decay
Pillow softly giving way
Making sure it's gonna be ok
No matter what they say
But they say bear down, bear down, bear down kid
And get up star
I finally found what you are
You just knocked 'em down
With the best sound around
Don't rely on me
'Cause you got all that you need

The hands move 'round
The groundskeeper keeps the ground
My heart beats up and down but mostly down
I was sheltering a note containing everything
A missive that was intercepted by the referee
On a see saw swell
I'm not well
When she kicks so hard
I fall too far
The word gets 'round
Keep ear to playground
The letter grown to legend
With the author in detention
And there she stands
Impatient look, extended hand
I'll acquiesce to her demands because she can demand
On a see saw swell
I'm not well
When she kicks so hard
I fall too far
We're on the see saw
And I guess she likes to make me feel afraid
Have you ever seen
The way girls drag stuffed animals by the leg
Have you ever seen
A bulldog dressed in high heels and a bra
That's not the limit of humiliation
Here on the see saw
See saw swell, I'm not well
Well there she stands
Impatient look, extended hand
I'll acquiesce to her demands because she can demand
On a see saw swell
I'm not well
When she kicks so hard
I fall too far
On a see saw swell
I can't tell
It's a brand new life
On a see saw swell

I won't tell what you told
I won't share what I know
I will grow old and no one will know
No one will know
And the mice in the walls
Bating breath heard it all
And chased down the hall
But I caught them all
Yeah I stopped them all
Ha ha ha
Going down incomplete
Had a dream, fell asleep
My teeth came unglued
And you were there too
You were there too
So take your time take a breath
A fractured mind needs a rest
And you were the best, you were the best
You were the best
Take your time take a breath
A fractured mind needs a rest
And you were
You were pressed against the outside in the gloom
Looking through into a room
Reaching rays between the shutter gates
To catch you in that state of mind
Not a bid for sympahty
Driving out of the city
I've got your heart
I want on top
Tear you apart
Run Off & Marry (Creighton)

So bored, the atmosphere could swallow me up
Made plans, contemplating not showing up
Think I can figure out what I'm gonna get
Perfect in all but one important aspect
Maybe you begin to mess around
I leave you crying like a lonesome hound
The candle wax will fill the tabletop
But just say it, say it, oh but just say it
It's not what it seems, we're compelled to move forward
In miserablese this is only the foreword
We've got 90 days so come on let's not dawdle
Let's run off and marry, let's bury our troubles
Went out for want of something better to do
Sucked in by the fact that you were sucked in too
Somehow my friends have got me calling you up
Say no, 'cause if you don't it won't ever stop
Maybe you begin to mess around
I leave you crying like a lonesome hound
The candle wax will fill the tabletop
But just say it, say it, oh but just say it
It's not what it seems, we're compelled to move forward
In miserablese this is only the foreword
We've got 90 days till the chemicals stop flowing
Let's run off and marry in spite of what we're both knowing
Maybe you begin to mess around
I'll leave you crying like a lonesome hound
The candle wax will fill the tabletop
And there'll be no one there to clean it up
We'll figure out that we have had enough
We'll figure out how to divide our stuff
We'll keep on talking too and never stop
But just say it, say it, come on and just say it
It's not what it seems, we're compelled to move forward
In miserablese this is only the foreword
We've got 90 days till the chemicals wear out
Let's run off and marry and then tear our hair out

You think you're ready
You think you've grown up
Watch out for love
You think you're prepared to accept
Another person's view of the world
Watch out for love
You're ready to open up
You're ready to change your ways
You're ready to stop seeing your friends
So you woke up with butterflies
You'd better take a few days
Watch out for love
It's no surprise, it's been a while
And you had your guard down anyway
Watch out for love
You're ready to start again
You're ready to get it right
You're ready to get it wrong in completely new ways
Yes, yes
You met someone special
You want to be sure
So get on the phone and ask...
Do you like movies
Do you like museums
Do you like dancing
Do you like video games
Do you like singing loud in the car
Do you like pets
Do you like music
Do you like seeing your friend's band play
Do you like driving nowhere
Do you like ice cream
You're still a beginner
You'll always be a beginner
But take a chance
Try not to hurt anybody
And watch out
Andy Creighton - instruments & vocals

Oceans are small
And I want to see the lights fall
Strip away pretend
Wash away everything
I'm taking everybody down if I go down
You won't catch me thinking of no one
I want everybody here just to know that
You'd better cross your fingers for me
Stuck on the interstate
High up on stilts that break
Underneath a monoxide blanket
We seek relief but cannot take it
I'm taking everybody down if I go down
You won't catch me thinking of no one
I want everybody here just to know that
You'd better cross your fingers for me
We won't be here again, understand
As I take it further than I had planned
We'll stare into the burning sky
I'm taking everybody down if I go down
You won't catch me thinking of no one
I want everybody here just to know that
You'd better cross your fingers for me

I've taken all, all I can take
I'm ankle deep in you
Fallen into tiny pieces on the floor
It's such a bore
I'm sweeping up around your writing desk
The stapler sits in the middle of it all
It is a symbol of all my struggles
Every day you leave me here with nothing else
Solvent bottle and a rag that's supposed to help
And all that I can do is cosmetic
Tomorrow it will be the same
I thought we talked about your habit
Taking things out, never putting them away
Am I just a slave? Be careful now
In all these books, so much wisdom
And you caress every page but I'm ignored
To say that I'm bored is understatement
Every day you leave me here with nothing else
Solvent bottle and a rag that's supposed to help
And all that I can do is cosmetic
Tomorrow it will be the same
Mabel, you're taking too long
You've got three more offices to do on this floor
Mabel, keep your mind on your work
Sometimes I don't know what we're paying you for
I dug around, look what I found
Romantic note in another person's hand
Well isn't that grand
The truth is out
I've taken all, all I can take
And you could eat off every surface
I can do nothing more for you
I'm out the door
Every day you leave me here with nothing else
There are others in the world who could use my help
Oh all I ever do is cosmetic
Tomorrow I'll be back again

Kid siamachy
It's addressed to me
I see what you mean, but
You don't impress me
With the big words
In your webster letter
No, you don't impress me
With the big words
In your webster letter
High reality, come crashing in on me
And I don't really need reminders
You call me mr saturnine
What's that even mean
You don't impress me, no
You don't impress me
With the big words
In your webster letter
No, you don't impress me
With the big words
In your webster letter
It's a monition to a moke she says to me
That's on page 23
And I'm the one accused of apostasy
We might as well be speaking different tongues
You don't impress me
You don't impress me
With the big words
In your webster letter
No, you don't impress me
With the big words
In your webster letter
Oh, take it down from the shelf
Comb through the words
All by yourself, what I deserve
Take care in every line like it matters
It might matter in another world, not here
You don't impress me with your big words

Fading light
Long shadows
On March Street
All around
The grownups
Play dress up
Traffic noise
And voices
Grow distant
Studying a menu in a restaurant window
Leaning in close to decide whether you'll go
And plenty of time on March Street
On March Street
Warm and snug inside
Eavesdrop on another booth
And laugh at the punchline
Avoid each other's eyes
Forks and knives
The check arrives
Holding hands saying wait for a minute
Breeze picks up and you find yourself in it
Caressed from all sides on March Street
Staying out walking on not sure where you're heading
Everything feels just like the beginning
With plenty of time on March Street
On March Street

I know she's a cracker
There's no need to attack her
Fallen on good times
Behind enemy lines
Big pressure on the eardrum
Head, lung, chamber heart
Deep deeper in the trench now
Head down, ocean up
A catalog of woes
Grows and grows
Bed and a breakfast
Overhanging a precipice
Big trouble on the surface
Clueless down below
Pan panic on the surface
And over they go now
They'll fall down deep, Marianas T
To the bottom of the sea
Where they'll wait for someone
But someone never comes
Miss orion
I'm watching you on
The television
It's been way too long
Big planning from the armchair
Don't care what goes wrong
Come on, come on
It's been way too long
Let's fall down deep, Marianas T
To the bottom of the sea
With the waves up above
Forget who you're thinking of
Jostling back and forth, cast my mind back
To when these tracks were new
But everything gets warped given time enough
And I've had time enough with you
Nothing new to report, and it occurs to me to wonder again
Why we're having this private conversation on public transportation
Corollarily Marianas T is not the place for me
When the coral cuts my feet, miss orion's mean
She don't care about me
And I'm tired all the time, I'm tired all the time
And I'm tired of wasting so much time
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

Here I sit, outside myself
Put my worries on the shelf
Drift away out past the cold and lies
Wash ashore, an unnamed coast
Where there's no guilt and there's no ghosts
Far away from everything that lies
On my head
Too much time was spent on you
My grace wears thin, I love you too
Just enough to make it for a while
Casting out, a note washed in
Said send me help or do me in
But I could not decide and now it lies
On my head
Singing
I'll be gone tomorrow
You'll be fine when I finally go
And raise a glass to sorrow
I'm happy to do my part
Though you pound on my door
I'm immune to your cries
'Cause I'm tied up inside beside all that lies
On my head

Walked past a thrift store
And opened the door
Went 'round to the back
Underneath the clothes rack
Looking for a moog
Or some clothes in vogue
Pulling back a tarp
Thought it was an arp
VIP600, I love you so
VIP six double-aught
You're not what I sought
Brought you back to my place
Dressed you up in lace
Put on my fave mix
Best of brazil '66
Then we started to dance
And I ripped my pants
We held each other tight
Through the tijuana night
VIP600, I love you so
VIP six double-aught
You're the only pal I've got
You're the only pal I've got
When we went hungry
You wanted sushi
I said where are we?
You said miami
You always stare at the moon
And you never played in tune
VIP six aught aught
You're not what I bought

Carolina won't work out
Don't go back to Carolina
Conversations don't go right
You're not listening Carolina
Don't you want to come out
Can't you let your pride down
Time to leave her dark house for good
Follow the white dotted lines
Will help to decide not to turn around
All the evenly spaced lights
Will help to decide not to turn around
The hum of the engine inside
Will help to decide to hold your ground
Pull up slowly her dark house
Call up softly Carolina
Andy Creighton - instruments & vocals
Recorded at Eddie Moffett's apartment
Shuffling through the hanging shirts
Three quarters to the back there it is
Does it taunt me
I knew you couldn't keep it going
Do I imagine that it beholds me with a silent contempt
It doesn't matter 'cause I'm going out to the steakhouse
Racing stripes, elastic bands
Drawstring hood, my jogging suit
Wore out my shoes under stadium lights
And city stars
It seems cruel to throw it away
Crueler still to let it sit
Give it a try for old time's sake
It almost fits
Stretching tight, racing stripes
Elastic bands, drawstring hood
Cakes of dust on shoulders lie
In closets dark, don't criticize
Just exercise, let freedom ring
Call all your friends, let's run away
Wear out my shoes under city stars
A golden head and a pumping heart
Imagine that, elastic bands
Run around, steakhouse bound
There it is, and there it is
My jogging suit, it almost fits
And a pumping heart in closets dark
Don't criticize, just exercise

Sunshine, lollipops & rainbows
Everything that's wonderful is what I feel
When we're together
Brighter than a lucky penny
When you're near the rain just disappears dear
And I feel so fine
Just to know that you are mine
My life is sunshine, lollipops & rainbows
That's how this refrain goes
So come on join in everybody
Sunshine, lollipops & rainbows
Everything that's wonderful is sure to come your way
When you're in love to stay
Sunshine, lollipops & rainbows
Everything that's wonderful is what I feel
When we're together
Brighter than a lucky penny
When you're near the rain just disappears dear
And I feel so fine
Just to know that you are mine
My life is sunshine, lollipops & rainbows
That's how this refrain goes
So come on join in everybody
Sunshine, lollipops & rainbows
Everything that's wonderful is sure to come your way
When you're in love
You're in love
And love is here to stay
Correct lyric: rain cloud disappears dear
We couldn't understand the words and sang it wrong.
